Tasting: Minnan Oolong Teas - Friday 30th Oct 2026 at 3PM

Date: Friday 30th Oct 2026                    Time: 3pm - 5pm

Location: Tea Shop, 281 Portobello Road

Minnan Oolong Tea (闽南乌龙茶) refers to teas from southern Fujian Province, an important historic region for Chinese oolong tea. Minnan oolongs are traditionally known for their fragrant aromas, elegant floral character, smooth texture and lingering aftertaste. Depending on the cultivar, harvesting season and processing style, they can express notes ranging from fresh flowers and fruit to honey, roasted nuts and gentle spice.

Among the region's most distinctive traditions is the craftsmanship of Tie Guan Yin, which may be enjoyed as a fresh, floral-style tea or transformed through traditional roasting and ageing. Carefully roasted and aged Tie Guan Yin can develop deeper, warmer notes, with greater richness, smoothness and complexity over time.

Our tasting explores several expressions of Minnan Oolong, including:

Lao Cong Minnan Oolongs:

We will taste two rare Oolongs which are harvested from old tea bushes (Lao Cong, 老枞) growing in the traditional terroir of Anxi County, Fujian. These older tea plants have been left without any attention for many decades in the deep mountain ranges, and has developed deeper root systems that draw more complex minerals from the soil, resulting in a richer, more layered tea:

1988 Aged Tie Guan Yin:

Harvested and traditionally processed in 1988, then carefully stored and naturally aged for many years, allowing its character to mature and develop greater depth and complexity.

Tie Guan Yin Honey Tea:

A reprocessed tea made by blending aged, charcoal-roasted Tie Guan Yin with local honey harvested in the wild forest in the winter. It is a traditional folk beverage andhas been part of Anxi’s traditional heritage for over a century and was historically used as a form of medicinal food therapy.
